SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

WHY IS SDG#14 SO IMPORTANT?

Fabien Cousteau states so eloquently, “We need to see our environment as a natural bank account. We need to stop eating away the capital and start living off the interest. A healthy environment is a healthy economy.”

HOW DOES KOHOLA THE MOVIE ALIGN WITH THE UN SDG?

We started shooting KOHOLA in 2020 during the COVID-19 crisis. We felt compelled when governments sent the people home hme that we continue to monitor and protect the most important resource on Earth – our oceans. Coupled with the fact that when Common Seas published its report on human consumption of plastic, we knew this story needed to be told.

KOHOLA is the voice of the oceans. The film’s themes directly align with SDG3, SDG12, and SDG14 including understanding the implications and health risks associated with the production of plastics; transition world governments to production cycles of a circular economy; preventing and significantly reducing marine pollution; and ending unsustainable consumer plastic production.

HOW YOU CAN TAKE ACTION

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) provide a road map of a set of goals that can be applied to individuals, communities and organizations. They provide a mechanism for achieving a sustainable future. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.

It’s important to note these goals are a framework of guidelines that can be adapted to your community, your country, your region. Not all goals may apply but the important thing is to note that a line has been drawn in the sand. Think how your local community, local council, workplace, school, business, can put actions in place to align with SDG 3, 12, & 14.
